About North Park
North Park covers about 2,258 acres in the center of the city. It sits on a broad mesa with hillsides and canyons along its edges near Mission Valley and Golden Hill.
Balboa Park borders it on the southwest. Its first subdivisions were recorded just after 1900, which makes it one of the older urban communities in San Diego.
The North Park community plan was adopted October 25, 2016. Read it on the City of San Diego community plan page.
Mesa Tops and Canyon Edges
Most lots are flat mesa tops. Lots on the northern and southeastern edges slope toward the canyons.
Mesa top lots are mostly flat until they reach a canyon rim. Water running off a new slab needs a planned path that does not dump onto the slope. Walls near a rim often carry a surcharge from the yard above.
The County says Expansive clay soaks up water and swells, then shrinks as it dries. That movement can lift and crack slabs. is most common in the coastal plains, per its soils report. For walls and foundations, ask for a soils report.
