What Stamped Concrete Is

Stamped concrete is a normal slab with a pattern pressed into the top while it is still soft. Crews add color, then press mats that look like stone, brick, slate or wood. The result is one solid slab with the look of pavers.

Other decorative choices include exposed aggregate, salt finish, color stain and a simple broom finish with a border. A contractor can show you samples before you choose.

Why It Holds Up Here

Freeze and thaw breaks down decorative concrete in cold places. That is not a San Diego problem. The National Weather Service says all measurable precipitation downtown has fallen as rain. The 1971 to 2000 normal is 10.77 inches a year.

Sun and foot traffic still wear the surface over time. That is why sealer matters. Ask how often the sealer should be redone and what it costs.

Cracks and Clay

All concrete can crack. On stamped work a crack shows more, because it cuts across the pattern. A control joint is a cut or groove that gives a slab a planned place to crack, so the crack runs straight and out of sight. hide in the pattern lines when they are planned well.

Much of the coastal plain has Expansive clay soaks up water and swells, then shrinks as it dries. That movement can lift and crack slabs., says the County. A solid, well packed base matters more on decorative work than on plain work, because a repair is harder to blend in.

Permits for Decorative Work

A stamped driveway or walk follows the same city code exemption as a plain one. At 30 inches or less above grade, and not part of an accessible route, the slab needs no building permit. A stamped approach at the curb is still street work, and a non standard design must be submitted with plans under IB-165.
