Big Trees, Big Roots

Big trees mean big roots. Driveways and walks near eucalyptus often lift and crack.

Large trees lift slabs as their roots grow. Before a new driveway or walk goes in, ask about root barriers, a thicker slab near trees and where the joints will go.

The County says Expansive clay soaks up water and swells, then shrinks as it dries. That movement can lift and crack slabs. is most common in the coastal plains, per its soils report. For walls and foundations, ask for a soils report.
